ARTISTS’ STATEMENT on
“URBAN WONDERLAND: THE TURO-TURO PROJECT”
The Neo-Angono Artists Collective presents new spheres of visual engagement through “Urban Wonderland: The Turo-Turo Project” – a site-specific zone intervention work wherein the group collaborates with the local community and residents of Intramuros. Graduating from the original concept of a “mural,” the work aims to transform several parts of the façade/structure of a chain of stores and eateries situated across the National Commission for Culture and the Arts building on Gen. Luna St. Appropriating the theme of “Public Art” as a modern allegory, the installation work reflects the geographic mosaic of location and identities. The work would touch on some episodes of Philippine history side by side with present social realities. The jarring juxtaposition of disparate elements in the work represents issues of displacement and the blurring of boundaries while hinting at questions regarding the nature of power and the use of art as a mechanism for social change.
As a descriptive reference to the “public,” the collective’s work hopes to serve as a contemporary rhetoric, integrating art into the public realm. This would be experienced on the day of production (February 1, 2008), when the group places life-sized and free-standing images of personages and characters scattered along the front parking lot of the work’s site. As a way of examining contact zones presented as dioramas of site-responsiveness, the public is invited to interact with the free-standing images by inserting their heads through some of the figures, to be photographed and integrated into the “scene” as a vital part of the project.
A workshop component involving the residents of the community will also be facilitated by the group prior to the February 1 date of installation. The workshop program aims to develop aspects of collaborative processes and foster awareness that hopefully would convey complex layers of social and cultural history. It would also make reference to the condition of society’s materialistic excesses, by extending layers of perspective that will be incorporated through the structure of their houses. Thus, constructed and mediated through diverse social levels, the project serves as a barometer of the issues and situations affecting the shaping of our public spaces and cultural domains. Exploring interaction with a true sense of purpose, the work would challenge notions of effacement, paradigms of control and the present cultural stigmata associated with the site.

Sa pamamagitan ng “Urban Wonderland: The Turo-turo Project,” isang obrang nakabase at nakatuon sa isang lugar at may pagtatangkang baguhin ang anyo nito, tinatangka ng Neo-Angono Artists Collective na maglahad ng bagong larangan ng paglikha sa sining-biswal. Kalahok at kabahagi sa proyekto ang lokal na komunidad at mga residente ng Intramuros. Tinatangka ng proyekto na igpawan ang orihinal at stereotipikong rendisyon ng mural sa pamamagitan ng pagbabagong-anyo sa mga bahagi ng itsura at estruktura ng mga bahagi ng tindahan at kainan (turo-turo) na nasa harap ng gusali ng National Commission for Culture and the Arts sa General Luna Street, Intramuros.
Gamit ang temang “Public Art” bilang kontemporaryong alegorya, sinasalamin ng installation work ang hinubog na mapa ng pinaghalu-halong mga lunan at kakanyahan (identities). Papaksain ng proyekto ang ilang bahagi sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas gayundin ang kasalukuyang realidad sa ating lipunan. Ang tila walang direksyon na pagsasalansan ng mga di-magkakaugnay na elemento ay kumakatawan sa diskurso ng pagkatiwalag (displacement) at pagpapalabo at pagbubura ng mga hanggahan. Kaalinsabay nito, tahimik itong nagpupukol ng mga tanong ukol sa ubod/esensya ng kapangyarihan gayundin sa paggamit sa sining bilang instrumento sa pagbabago ng lipunan.
Bilang batayang paglalarawan sa “publiko,” tinatangka ng proyekto na maging kontemporaryong retorika sa pamamagitan ng pagsasalakop sa sining sa pampublikong larangan. Mararanasan ito sa mismong araw kung kailan gagawin ng grupo ang proyekto (Pebrero 1, 2008). Maglalagay ang Neo-Angono ng mga life-sized at free-standing images ng mga tao at personahe sa harap ng parking lot. Bilang porma ng pagsusuri sa lunan, tagpuan at diorama na humihimok ng tugon, inaanyayahan ang publiko na makihalubilo sa mga free-standing images sa pamamagitan ng pagsusuot ng kanilang ulo sa butas na mukha ng imahe upang magpakuha ng litrato at maging bahagi mismo ng “lunan at tagpo” na mahalagang aspeto ng proyekto.
Bahagi ng proyekto ang workshop kung saan kalahok ang mga residente ng lugar. Gagawin ito bago ang Pebrero 1. Layunin ng workshop na paunlarin ang mga aspeto kaugnay sa proseso ng kolektibong paggawa at iangat ang kamalayan ukol sa kumplikadong antas ng ating kasaysayang panlipunan at pangkultura. Tatalakayin din sa workshop ang tila lubhang pagbibigay-diin ng lipunan sa materyalismo at tatangkaing gawin ito sa pamamagitan ng pagdadagdag at pagpapalawak sa mga bistang matatanaw sa mga nakahilerang bahay. Kung kaya, bilang gawang bingyang-anyo at pinadaan sa magkakaibang antas ng lipunan, ang proyekto/installation ay magsisilbing sukatan sa mga usapin at kalagayang nakakaapekto sa pagbuo ng mga pampublikong lunan at mga larangang pangkultura. Samantalang mapaglayong ginagalugad at ginagamit ang diwa ng interaksyon, hinahamon at binabaka ng proyekto ang ating mga saloobin ukol sa pagsira at pagkawala, sa panuntunan ng lakas at kapangyarihan, at sa kasalukuyang “tatak” o markang pangkultura na iniuugnay sa lugar kung saan gagawin ang mural-installation.
Ang “Turo-turo Project” ng Neo-Angono Artists Collective ay bahagi ng “Pasakalye” na pambungad na palatuntunan ng NCCA-Committee on Visual Arts para sa Philippine Art Festival simula Pebrero 1.
